- My breasts have been tender for about 3 weeks now, maybe I should go to the doctors as I am a bit worried...
- Eli, I think you're pregnant.
This was the conversation I had with my workfriend one day, it was the absolute LAST thing I expected - a positive pregnancy test!
After work that night I went straight to a pharmacy to get a test.
Running to the bathroom as soon as I got home to take it. The test came back positive within a second!
I was in shock, to say the least. But that was nothing compared to the look on my partner's face when I told him the news. We sat on the sofa talking, deciding. And he told me anything I decide to do, he was going to support me, of course.
Luckily, my best friend was around to lend his support and he reassured me I would be a great mum, and i was never going to be alone. And that same night it was decided. I was going to have a baby!
My partner and I finally came to terms with the fact that we were going to be parents. The initial shock had worn off, and we felt more at ease with the idea of starting a family. The fact that our parents were supportive and excited for us made us even more calm.
I made an appointment with the social security doctor in San Isidro to ensure I was getting all the care I needed. I was scheduled to meet with a midwife for regular checkups and they even booked my first scan appointment, which was still a few weeks away. But I wasn't about to miss out on the experience of seeing my baby as soon as possible!
Thankfully, I was able to secure insurance with Sanitas, and they were able to fit me in for an appointment at Hospiten Hospital in Las Americas. I met with Dr. Felix, a brilliant doctor who explained the whole process in detail. It was incredible to see my baby on the screen for the first time - a moment that I'll never forget! He was literally a little tiny bean, and I was confirmed to be 5 weeks pregnant.
After the appointment, I had to head straight to work. It was strange, feeling the effects of pregnancy already. My belly was starting to feel different - but that might have just been in my head!
Overall, it was an incredible experience that I'll cherish forever. The support of our families and the expertise of Dr. Felix made all the difference in turning this unexpected moment into one of the happiest times of my life.
This journey so far has certainly been a roller coaster, but I'm grateful for every moment - even the ones that left me with a case of pregnancy brain or a strange craving for watermelon when it is was out of season.
So here's to embracing the adventure of motherhood - one surprising moment at a time!
